Thirteen members of the men’s and women’s track and field team competed at this year’s National Track and Field meet held in Hutchinson, Kansas. The team battled great competition and tough weather conditions. The women’s team placed 31st and the men’s team placed 23rd.
Placing for the women’s team was Ebony Smith in the long jump. She was ranked 12th going into the meet but finished in 7th place. Fellow long-jumper Mallory Tharp was ranked 16th going in to the meet but finished in 8th place. For the men’s team, Jared Kern finished in 4th place in the shot put. Kern was also named the Atlantic Division Male Field Event winner by the USTFCCA at the National Meet. Tavion Neal came into the decathlon ranked 12th but finished in 7th place.
Coach Herron said, “I was very pleased at how well we placed this weekend. Almost all of our athletes and relays finished well above where they were ranked coming into the meet. We had several events barely miss finals but at a National meet those things are going to happen. Both teams had excellent seasons. They have a lot to be proud about. We had an excellent group of sophomores that will be missed. I know that are freshman and incoming freshman will be up for the challenge of continuing their winning tradition.”
